Motivation#
As a French Bulldog lover, I noticed a gap in the market for comprehensive, well-researched information about the breed. Many existing resources were either outdated or lacked depth.
I wanted to create an authoritative platform that would help both new and experienced French Bulldog owners while building a sustainable business through affiliate partnerships.
Implementation#
Initially I built with Gatsby.js as I wanted my site to be the fastest among its competitors.
Over time, I transitioned to WordPress as I needed a more robust content management system to handle the growing amount of content. WordPress also allowed me to focus on business development and content strategy while maintaining SEO.
WordPress gets a lot of undeserved hate for being “insecure” or “slow”, but when done right, it can be a very secure and performant platform that is scalable and easy to maintain.
My WordPress setup uses Rocket.net for hosting, and Cloudflare for DNS, CDN, and caching… plus lots of manual optimizations to ensure the site stayed fast after the transition from Gatsby.
I monetized the site through Mediavine for ads and affiliate programs such as Amazon Associates and Chewy.
Key Achievements#
- Scaled to 3.5M+ unique visitors over 3 years
- Generated $100,000+ annual revenue through affiliate partnerships
- Ranked #1 for numerous high-value keywords
- Managed freelance writer collaborations to expand content
- Successfully migrated from Gatsby.js to WordPress while maintaining SEO
Technical Evolution#
Initial Build (Gatsby.js)#
- Static site generation for optimal performance and SEO
- React-based component system
- SCSS for styled components
- Markdown-based content management
- Git-based version control
Current Platform (WordPress)#
The site reached a point where I needed a more robust content management system, so I transitioned to WordPress.
This allowed me to focus on business development and content strategy while maintaining SEO.
As I said earlier, I strongly disagree with the notion that WordPress is inherently slow or insecure.
I’ve proven that it can be a very performant and secure platform when done right, having served 3.5M+ unique visitors over 3 years without a single breach or major outage.
In addition, the site has maintained perfect Google PageSpeed Insights scores for years even with heavy ad placements (thanks Mediavine!).
Sure, it is the most popular CMS which makes it a popular target for hackers, but there are still many ways to secure your site.
Business Development#
- Implemented data-driven content strategy, performing data analysis with pandas to identify trending topics and optimize content
- Established partnerships with major pet brands such as Chewy
- Created scalable content production workflow
